Academic Programs

Each child is nurtured, valued and encouraged to work to their full potential. The experience of the students at St. Mary Magdalen School is one of vast opportunities academically, socially and spiritually. We support the continuous improvement of student achievement and our curriculum was designed not only to meet, but to exceed state and national standards.

We follow curriculum standards that are published by the Office of Education, Evangelization and Catechesis (OEEC). We maintain a balanced curriculum, including religion, language arts (English grammar, phonics, writing, reading, vocabulary, spelling, oral language, and handwriting), science, mathematics, geography, social studies, health/wellness, physical education, the arts, music, world languages, and service learning.

Our Curriculum:

Our curriculum is enhanced by the use of daily technology in each classroom. Students in Pre-K through Grade 8 use Smart Boards regularly and also receive weekly Computer Education. Each child has access to and learns to use desktop and laptop computers, as well as iPads and Chrome Books. The technology curriculum at SMMS includes coding, keyboarding, digital citizenship, proper use of the internet for communication and research, and gives students the opportunity to learn many software programs, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and apply it to their school work. Teachers enhance their daily instruction with programs such as the Google suite, flip classroom, webquests, Skype lessons and more.

Little Scholars Program

Pre-K 3 and 4:
I will advance as I learn new skills and prepare for elementary school.

Pre-kindergarten is a critical time for children as they begin the adventure of a lifetime of learning. Every day your child is learning and doing more, which is why the School of Little Scholars of St. Mary Magdalen Pre-kindergarten program is designed to challenge more.

Our Goal:

Our goal in Pre-Kindergarten is to teach the whole child by providing a nurturing, secure environment in which learning can take place. In the Pre-Kindergarten program, we seek to educate the mind, the heart, and the will. Recognizing that each child is made in the image and likeness of God, our teachers focus on giving personal attention to each child through developmentally appropriate methods, and within high academic standards. We promote independence in an organized atmosphere, as it is increasingly important for children to be their own thinkers. We also teach children to work well within a group through listening, sharing and cooperation. These early learning years are important; a time when good habits are developed and character formation begins.

Early character formation occurs through young students forming habits like self-control, generosity, and respect of others. Our Pre-Kindergarten programs provide structure, academic foundation, study of the Catholic faith, and leadership opportunities. Children learn to lead by example, and will experience many opportunities to build self-confidence. Strength lies in virtue as well as in academic performance. At the School of Little Scholars of St. Mary Magdalen our students are taught the value of faith, virtue and service to others, as a complement to a strong academic curriculum.

Elementary & Intermediate Program

Grades K-5:
I will advance as I learn new skills and prepare for middle school.

Our aim and purpose of the St. Mary Magdalen elementary school program is to provide a caring and safe atmosphere in which students enjoy learning and developing their unique God-given talents.

Our Goal:

We seek to instill in students organizational skills and study habits that will apply to all aspects of their lives and to challenge the students to integrate acquired knowledge, skills and experience to solve problems using a variety of resources. We strive to foster within the students a sense of personal responsibility for academic work and for the completion of various tasks, thereby developing self-confidence.

Academic success in the later years depends on having a good foundation in reading, writing, speaking, and math. These subjects are the core of the primary curriculum. Cross-curriculum teaching and integration of subjects unifies the primary grade learning for the whole child and recognizes each child as a unique gift from God with their own gifts and talents. Religion is taught as a core subject and integrated into all aspects of curriculum.

Middle School Program

Grades 6-8:
I will advance as I learn new skills and prepare for high school and beyond.

The goal of the Middle School Program is to provide a community in which learning addresses the intellectual, spiritual, moral, emotional, social, and physical development of the early adolescent.

Our Goal:

Students are provided with educational experience that facilitates the transition from elementary school to the more rigorous learning environment of high school.

Although the content areas are departmentalized, the approach to the curriculum as a whole is fully-integrated, supporting hands-on activities and project-based learning. Students are taught to master skills and to progress from concrete to abstract thinking as they mature intellectually.

Students in middle school develop advanced skills in using individual chrome books that they are given for the entire school year and interactive Smartboards to prepare and present their work. Teachers and students use Google Classroom for note taking and assignments.
